hi

na ist ja klasse. Wie hast du den diesen Ball gemodelt. Der von der letzten WM, war auch nicht gerade einfach. Können wir den Ball als Modell haben?

very nice and i think difficult too create the model. Can we have the Scene?

Hi guys, as i promised, here is the tutorial for making the Jabulani ball, i will upload images for every step and modifier used.

To begin we create a geosphere, the radius doesn't matter, set only one segment and tetra type. Image 1

Image

Then add an edit poly modifier, select all the vertices and chamfer them to the maximum limit. Image 2.

Image

add a turbosmooth with 1 iteration. (our model has to be like this or the previous steps were not followed correctly) image 3.

Image

add another Edit Poly modifier, select the edges that are shown in the image 4 and scale them, in order to give it a triangular shape. Convert the mesh to editable poly, go to the hierarchy panel and center the pivot, then reset xform. If you are using 3ds max 2010 in the edit meni, there is the transform toolbox, press the R so you can reset xform. Image 5.

Add a spherify modifier, a turbosmooth with b iterations, then another spherify, center the pivot again and reset xform (image 6), and other turbosmooth with 1 iteration. When we center the pivot every time we add a modifier we can achieve an even mesh, if you dont do that there will be areas bigger than others. Image 7.

Image
Image

add a spherfy again, at this point our model is almost done, if check it you cane see that the mesh is even and ready for add the cuts. Image 8.

Image

convert the mesh to editable poly, select the edges that are shown in the image, this has to be done in all the mesh, chamfer it with 0 distance and open edges, press OK (image 9), and chamfer again but this time with 0.05 distance and open unchecked, press Ok. Image 10.

Image
Image

Now let's do the other cuts, select the edges that are shown in the image, chamfer again, 0 distance and open checked, press OK (image 11) and chamfer again with 0.05 distance and open unchecked, press OK. Image 12.

Image
Image

Add a shell modifier, inner amount in 0.05 and outer amount in 0.0 (image 13), then a turbosmooth with 1 iteration and activate isoline display. Image 14.

And that's all that you need to get the Jabulani, i hope to be clear with the steps.

Bye.
