Nearly four years after NVIDIA acquired mental images, the Berlin-based software unit specialized in rendering and 3D-visualization technology, we’re fully integrating it into our other activities focused on software solutions for design professionals. From an internal perspective, it will enable us to improve our own internal collaboration. From an external perspective, it will speed our ability to bring new products and technologies to market.

The combined group brings together mental images with related efforts in the Quadro group focused on the world’s most demanding design professionals, from feature film artists to architects and product designers. It will be called ARC, our acronym for Advanced Rendering Center, underscoring its standing as the new center of gravity for expanding the boundaries of state of the art rendering.

Founded 25 years ago, mental images, had operated independently since its acquisition by NVIDIA to ensure continuity for its key customers. Its products are ubiquitous in the entertainment, CAD and visualization fields. Best known for mental ray – the most widely used rendering software within industry leading design and animation tools — the company has expanded its offerings to include iray, a renderer that makes photorealism easy to achieve faster by running GPUs, as well as technologies that enable interactive, cloud-based rendering.

We’re happy to welcome mental images into the NVIDIA fold and are looking forward to delivering our customers even more great rendering solutions.
